As the body ages, the appearance and characteristics of the skin changes and is most visible. The speed and extent that the skin ages is only partly influenced by genetic factors. Ageing is primarily influenced by lifestyle factors such as the sun, pollution of the environment, smoking, diet, stress and a lack of sleep to name only a few.

Chemical peeling is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures done by medical doctors and skin therapists

It is also one of few treatment modalities that has medical and cosmetic benefits. Peels are a powerful tool to help achieve results in combination with a good skin care range, Botulinum Toxin, Filler injections and Laser treatments.

The peeling procedure is also referred to as chemo – exfoliation. It involves the application of a chemical solution to the surface of the skin to produce the careful removal of its very outer mostly dead layers. The amount of skin removed will depend on the type of chemical used, the strength of this product and how long it is left on the skin.

Chemical peels can be used on most areas of the body – they are however frequently used on the face, neck and back of the hands

The Benefits of having a Chemical peel

  • Exfoliate to refine and tone the skin
  • Improve certain skin spots, blemishes or lesions such as acne
  • Improve pigmentation
  • Elastin & Collagen growth may be induced leading to tightening of the skin
  • Peels hydrate the skin and can improve penetration of skincare products

Superficial Peels: The classic arena of beauty therapists in salons

Superficial Peels remove the outer layer of the skin, the so called Epidermal Layer. These peels are very popular in the medical field and rapidly gaining ground in the beauty industry. Superficial peels have no “down time” and assist to lessen rough skin texture, dry or flaking skin, fine lines due to sun damage, mild acne marks & “age spots” (brownish patches which can be caused by sun damage) It can also aid in balancing irregular skin tones when it becomes uneven in colour.

Superficial peels are extremely popular and most often contain some form of fruit acid (Glycolic), which is a family of chemicals known to cause exfoliation (removing the top layer of dead skin cells in the epidermis) when applied to the surface of the skin. A peel prior to a special occasion leaves the face looking alive and glowing. During the procedure most patients experience a mild stinging sensation whilst the glycolic acid is on the face. The face is often pink after the solution is removed or has a blotchy appearance that usually fades within a couple of hours. Some patients do not experience any visible peeling off of the skin after treatment, but the treatment still has a beneficial effect similar to exfoliation.

Medium Depth Peels: More the arena of medical aesthetic setup where a doctor is present to supervise

Medium Depth Peels remove both the Epidermal Layers and upper Dermal Layers. These peels are popular and very effective, give excellent results, but the treatment does require a little “down time”.

Medium depth peels can reduce small wrinkle lines, some acne scars and pigmentation problems related to ageing and sun damage.

With Medium Depth Peels a stronger peeling solution is involved. Higher strength solutions like T.C.A. (Trichloroacetic acid) are widely used and can be applied on its own, up to 50% in strength. T.C.A is frequently used in concentrations between 25% – 35% to help reduce possible side effects. T.C.A. can also be used in combination with Glycolic Acid or other solutions to help achieve a controlled and accurate peel path.

During the procedure most patients experience some burning and stinging of the skin that can lasts for approximately an hour. The face may slightly swell shortly after the solution has been applied and turn Pink. Over the next few days, the face may turn a dark Brown colour, with streaks of White appearing amongst the Brown. The skin will then begin to peel, over a 5 – 6-day period, and tends to itch during this healing phase. After peeling, the face will be bright reddish which will fade to a fresh Pink tone in most patients over the following 3 – 6 weeks.

Deep Peels: Definitely the playing field of typically medical aesthetic practice like those find at Longiva Healthy Ageing Institute

Deep peels extend deeper into the lower Dermal Layer of the skin. Deep peels can help to reduce the appearance of deeper lines, wrinkles and scars but has to be done by medical doctors under anesthetic. Because of this and the side effects these procedures have, Deep peels are replaced by Laser, Light and Radio Frequency resurfacing by means of modern devices like the ELOS™ Plus used at Longiva.

Choosing the right skin care solution for skin rejuvenation was once a confusing and difficult decision,

but ELOS™ technology has changed everything. ELOS™ is proven to be a safer, effective and more comfortable Skin Rejuvenation solution for the superior results you require.

Intermittent pulsed light is used to improve hyperpigmentation, vascular lesions, to refine veins and pores and to improve the tone and texture of the skin

Four-week intervals between treatment dates. Usually, four treatments will deliver optimal results

Treatment Areas:

  • Full Face
  • Neck
  • Décolleté
  • Both Hands

Skin rejuvenation with Light Waves made tremendous leaps over the past 10 years. Recent data confirms the safety of Laser treatment and encourages a focused, skin-type protocol for improved results like:

Enhanced skin tone, Smoothness and Tightness of the skin
Skin resurfacing is initiated after Light Waves take away the dead Superficial Layer of the skin. During this process cell turnover is increased in old skin, allowing new youthful skin to flourish –

The skin is brighter, pores are smaller and the colour very even.

Small Veins with Laser
Our small vein devices have customized rejuvenating head settings which aims directly at all the little red veins that disfigure the skin and makes it look less even / bright.

It leaves no flaking or downtime and results are visible after the first treatment.

Hyperpigmentation with Laser
Improve the appearance of dark pigmented spots with only a few sessions. The rejuvenating Syneron E-plus combines Radio Frequency Waves with Light Wave Energy to reduce Light Energy Exposure and consequently prevent skin complications after treatment.

Darker, olive skin diminishing pigment requires gentle stand-alone treatment with Radio Frequency Waves to ensure complete skin rejuvenation without occurrences of hyperpigmentation.

A non-surgical, all-natural option to safely and comfortably tighten the skin of the brow, eyelids, face, jaw, neck, abdomen and arms. We are proud to offer The ReFirme™ Skin Tightening procedure, via wrinkle reduction, using ELOS technology.

This is the first and only technology that uses combined energies to effectively and gently tighten your skin. It is a non-invasive, non-surgical technology that will tighten your skin and reduce your wrinkles.

The combined Bi-polar Radio Frequency and light energies of ELOS technology precisely heat the dermal tissue within the target treatment area. This stimulates collagen production and produces a firming effect in lax skin. Fine wrinkles are reduced, noticeable lifting can be observed and the texture of your skin becomes smoother and more elastic.

ReFirme™ is a gentle, comfortable treatment requiring no downtime. This procedure is so gentle it can be used on any skin colour. Many patients return to normal activities immediately after the treatment.

Areas that benefit most from ReFirme™ Skin Tightening & Wrinkle Reduction Treatments:

  • Jowl laxity
  • Neck laxity
  • Sagginess under eyes
  • Sagging brow line
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Upper/lower mandible

Six-week intervals between treatment dates. Usually, three to six treatments of 45 minutes each is required.

For most patients this is a pain free procedure. As every person has a different threshold for pain, for those especially sensitive patients there are protocols that will accommodate them.

Radiofrequency (RF) is the number of oscillations (or waves) per second of the electric and magnetic fields within the radio waves portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

By applying RF energy to the human body, which can conduct the current and therefore act as part of the electrical circuit, any resistance encountered by the energy flow will cause heat to be produced at the site of maximum resistance, which can be used to cut or coagulate tissue.

Lasers which are light sources affect collagen in the upper dermis, improving fine lines, wrinkles and skin texture, while RF energy is able to penetrate deeper into the skin and affect the deeper dermis and subcutaneous layers, causing tightening and improvements to the underlying tissue structure, but with little change in skin texture or fine lines and wrinkling and very important there is no risk for hyperpigmentation in the darker skin as is the case with light (Lasers)

Pure RF energy alone is primarily used to treat skin laxity by facial tightening, and is best suited to patients with mild to moderate sagging of facial tissues, usually those in their mid-thirties to fifties, with any skin colour.

RF is frequently used to treat

The Forehead
Lift brows and tightens forehead skin

Under the eyes
Thickens skin and tightens and lifts the upper cheek skin

Lifts slightly and diminishes enlarged pores

Jaw line
Diminishes jowling and sagging along the jaw line

Tightens skin and diminishes wrinkling of the neck

During the procedure a topical anesthetic cream may be applied to your skin  to help numb the skin slightly. Some patients experience mild redness immediately following treatment (similar to a sunburnt look). Most patients find that they will be swollen on the treated area and a down-time of 3-5 days is required, depending on the specific RF technology used.

ELOS™ Sublative™ penetrates below the surface layers of your skin to stimulate cell regrowth with long lasting results.

This stunning device improves texture and tightness of the skin and reduces acne and acne scarring very effectively. The tightening also has a lift effect of the tissue over cheeks and jaw line

Six-week intervals between treatment dates. Usually, only two treatments will deliver optimal results

Treatment Areas:
Full face

This dramatic new treatment for tightening of skin around the eyes, top lip and vertical lines over the cheeks is also known as PLEXR® or JETT PLASMA LIFT®

It is the next generation technology for skin tightening and stimulating collagen production. It uses a current of ionized gas to induce tightening of the skin.

As we grow older the cells in our skin become sluggish in their turnover.  A healthy skin should be a new skin every 28 days but without topical stimulation it may easily land up being 60 to 70 days.

In view of our high exposure to sunlight and environmental damage the skin undergoes extensive free radical damage and wear and tear through ensuing inflammation.

It is mandatory to use a good skin range with the necessary active ingredients to clean, get rid of dead cells and stimulate new skin formation.

Gone are the days where a woman can use an expensive skin range that is only slap on creams and lotions that do not even penetrate the skin’s outer layers and do virtually nothing to protect the skin against damage and even less to stimulate new growth and healing.

Every person should be on a range of home topicals, from a well-known brand that use modern science to protect the skin. Included must be a cleansing and conditioning agent with proper moisturizing included. It should also include a Sun Protection product that complies to modern science and international criteria.

Longiva Medical Institute is an integrative health and wellness clinic designed with the modern individual in mind.
